Scripture for Sunday, March 1

Luke 13:10-21

Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, "Woman, you are set free from your ailment." When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God.

But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, "There are six days on which work ought to be done, come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day." But the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?" When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.

He said therefore, "What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches."

And again he said, "To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened."

Music

Listen to one of our newer songs.

The minor key of this song gives voice to our lament for all that is wrong in our world. The plea of the chorus, "Have mercy, have mercy; Renew us, restore us," is a fitting cry for this time in history no matter where we live.

Communion - this Sunday

Communion is a symbolic reenactment of the last supper Jesus shared with his disciples. The bread (gluten-free) and juice symbolize his death, point to his resurrection, and remind us that through his death he defeated the power of sin and death over us. Everyone is free to choose for themselves whether to participate or not.

Spared for a Season

Sunday, February 22, 2026

This sermon cautions against assuming that bad things happen to people because they deserve it - because God is punishing them - and to instead focus on ourselves and our own sinfulness. It reminds us that it is Jesus who makes us acceptable to God and that without Jesus it is impossible for any of us to be acceptable (holy and righteous) before God.

Questions for Reflection (Adults)

  1. In what ways do you find yourself comparing your life or your sin to others to make you feel 'good enough'?
  2. What does repentance look like for you right now -- not in theory, but in a specific area of your life?
  3. Is there any area of your life that you need to surrender to Jesus for transformation? What is holding you back?

Questions for Reflection (Children)

  1. Why do you think Jesus wants us to think about our own hearts and lives instead of comparing ourselves to others?
  2. What does it mean to say "I'm sorry" to God? Can you think of time you needed to do this?
  3. In the story about the fig tree, why do you think the gardener asked for more time? What does that tell us about God?
