Scripture for Sunday, May 10

Luke 16:14-31

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they ridiculed him. So he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts, for what is prized by humans is an abomination in the sight of God.

“The Law and the Prophets were until John came; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is being proclaimed, and everyone tries to enter it by force. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.

“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whoever marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.

“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores.

The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus in like manner evil things, but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’ He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house—for I have five brothers—that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’ Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’ He said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”

Message Topic: We are invited to examine our life choices and actions, especially regarding our wealth and possessions, in light of the reality that we have limited time in which to live well.

Music

Communion - this Sunday

Communion is a symbolic reenactment of the last supper Jesus shared with his disciples. The bread (gluten-free) and juice symbolize his death, point to his resurrection, and remind us that through his death he defeated the power of sin and death over us. Everyone is free to choose for themselves whether to participate or not.

For Whom Do You Live?

Sunday, May 10, 2026

This sermon wrestles with Jesus’ strange parable of the dishonest manager in Luke 16, arguing that Jesus is not praising dishonesty but calling his followers to be just as wise and intentional in using their resources, abilities, and treasures for God’s kingdom as the world is in pursuing its own goals. Ultimately, the sermon challenges us to examine what we truly serve—wealth, security, control, or God—and to use everything we have in faithful service to Christ.

Questions for Reflection (Adults)

  1. What part of the parable of the dishonest manager did you find most surprising or uncomfortable? Why?
  2. What are some of the “tools” or treasures God has entrusted to you (money, time, skills, relationships, education, influence, citizenship, freedom, etc.)?
  3. In what ways do you tend to use those tools for your own security or control? In what ways are you using them for God’s kingdom?
  4. How does trusting God’s eternal kingdom change the way you think about success, security, and the future?
  5. What might it look like for you to be more intentional and “shrewd” in using your resources for God’s purposes this week?

Questions for Reflection (Children)

  1. What are some special things God has given you to use and share (kindness, talents, toys, time, helping others)?
  2. Who are some people in your life who use what they have to help others? What can you learn from them?
  3. What is something you treasure or care about a lot? How could you use it for good?
  4. How does it make you feel to know that God will always care for you, even when life feels uncertain?
